Birthday Chaos
Published 14 Comments

Okay, this is getting weird. 😄
I was rewatching Season 11, Episode 14 (“Breaking Up Is Easy to Do – Part 1”) and noticed something I had completely forgotten.

During the board game scene, Al is asked Peggy’s birthday.

His answer?

March 12. (My birthday.)

Peg immediately corrects him:

“April 12.” (Ed O’Neill’s birthday.)

In the show, that’s actually Peg’s birthday. Which makes this whole thing even weirder. 🤯

After more than 30 years of watching this show, I still keep finding random little Bundy coincidences.

And while we’re at it…
How exactly did birthdays work in the Bundy universe?
I vaguely remember there being some confusion about Al’s birthday at some point, and I know Seven was actually given a birthday. But what about Bud and Kelly?
Were their birthdays ever mentioned on the show?

I need some serious Bundy nerd knowledge here.

Yes, birthdays were mentioned… although not always celebrated!

Peggy: In Season 4 Al takes the family bowling, not knowing that it was Peggy’s birthday. He tries to set the high game score at his bowling alley, but Peggy bowls a 300. Later in the series, Marcy surprises Peggy with an exotic dancer for her birthday. Also… the Reverend Al episode. The church of No Ma’am is taken down because Marcy showed photos of Al taking Peggy to dinner (eating quiche), a ballet, and the Rock’em Sock’em Motel for her birthday.

Al: Al’s birthday was given to Seven and they celebrate in the park. A few seasons later, Griff & Jefferson take Al to the Jiggly Room and give him gift cards for a topless car wash (Soapy Headlights).

Bud: Bud’s birthday is revealed in the classic episode, “Rites of Passage”, in which Al takes Bud to the nudie bar.

Kelly: The Bundy’s reluctantly took Kelly to a movie on her birthday, where Al beats up her boyfriend. The episode was titled “Movie Show”

As far as actual birthdates go, some are mentioned in the episode where they celebrate Seven (and Al’s) birthday in the park. Al’s is March, Peggy’s in April, Bud’s is January 22, and Kelly’s is in November.

    I hope this helps!

You are a person after my own heart, lol. I’m glad I’m not the only walking encyclopedia when it comes to this show!

oh yes, The Nudie Bar. how could I forget? WHat a week on set that was. That could be a zoom party on it’s own Let’s consider that

Wow, that’s exactly the kind of Bundy nerd knowledge I was hoping for.
I remembered bits and pieces, but I had completely forgotten how many birthday-related episodes there actually were. And now the March/April coincidence feels even stranger than before.

Funny enough, the old German Bundy books listed completely different birthdays:
    Al – February 30, Peggy – April 1, Kelly – May 12, and Bud – October 14.

Looks like Bundy birthday continuity was just as chaotic as everything else in the Bundy universe. 😄

    Thanks for the detailed answer!

yes, seems like there was no rhyme, reason or continuity for a lot of things on the show. Like Buck’s voice 😂ds

I forget which episode it is, but there’s one where Al’s revoked driver’s license is shown. His birthday on it is listed November 7, 1948.

@motormouth95yahoo-com Al having a revoked license on permanent record is the single most accurate piece of continuity this show ever pulled off. Born November 7 1948, peaked in 1966, been coasting on fumes ever since. The DMV genuinely knows my dad better than my dad ever knew any of us. Great catch.

This is definitely something we need to ask Richard about. Maybe it was purposefully ambiguous as a joke. The family doesn’t really know each other’s birthday or their own.

TheCharlie covered most of it, but a few more:

In Season 3, Al famously buys Peggy some bras (Fancy Figure 327s) for her birthday.

In Season 5, they are hanging out in the supermarket on the hot day, and Peggy says, “Oh, Al! You remembered my birthday!” (Which doesn’t really track, because it wouldn’t be that hot in April in Chicago, I don’t think…)

In Season 11, Al is held hostage on his birthday in the shoe store by all the women he has insulted over the years. They tear up his birthday dinner coupons. And Kelly and Bud buy him tinted windows for the Dodge.

two things. 1, I love that we are trying to make sense of the chaos that was the show. Love the “it wouldn’t be that hot in April in chicago” bit. that’s AMAZING. and 2, is this the same episode that Kelly and me tint the windows of the dodge in the garage??

That’s the one! Season 11, Episode 9 – “Crimes Against Obesity”

oh wow. that is freaky. good catch. I’m March 3rd, which actually adds nothing relevant to this post.

Well, unlike the Bundy birthdays, that one is actually easy to verify. According to Google, you’re telling the truth. ☺️

Thank you all! I started this post hoping to solve one little Bundy mystery.
Instead, you all managed to make me even more confused. 🤣 And honestly? I’m loving it.
At this point, I’ve come to one conclusion: the Bundys may not have had much, but apparently they had several birthdays a year. 😂
