Ed O’Neill broke character… again?
July 24, 2026
We all know about the time Ed O’Neill got caught breaking character when Santa fell to his death in the Bundy backyard in Season 2. Upon my rewatching of the show… again… I found this little gem!
Season 8, Episode 9
No Ma’am
At approximately the 19:28 mark, the dialogue is:
Marcy: “And if it’s true we spend so little time in the kitchen, then how come you spend so much time in the bathroom?”
Al: “BECAUSE! Because… you’re a chicken!”
You can see Ed starting to break character in the delivery. When the camera cuts to both Al and Marcy, you can see Ed trying to maintain composure. He is doing his best, but something about that moment must have really got him.
I love it.

I think he did too!
haaaaa! Nice catch sir!!
Here’s another one, where Ed almost broke. The 0:19 mark of this video. Ed starts to laugh, and has to cover his mouth, when he says, “Dollar ninety-eight….” This was “The Juggs Have Left the Building”, Season 11, episode 7.
You guys are amazing. The things you notice!
Did you notice Christina almost breaking on It’s a Bundyful Life? Right after she tells Al it’s “Terminus” she covers her mouth just like Jimmy Fallon used to do on SNL.
Ed’s tell of almost breaking was covering his mouth definitely .. Theres a few of them, I’ll post them as I think of them.
The famous Christmas scene where Ed’s breaks, if watch closely, you’ll notice Katey breaks first (probably) and leans in into Ed which definitely causes Ed to laugh and break, and the only other one who comes very close is Steve, he turns and you can see before he gets all the way around he’s holding it in., and Bud you can tell slightly that he was laughing.
Haven’t seen this episode in quite some time, but does Ed break character when Santa falls to his death? Need to look for clips and look for the episode to watch in its entirety.
Ed looks back at Santa on the ground, slowly turns to the camera, and holds in his laughter with a slight grin.
Caught. In my defense, once Katey went the whole table was finished and everyone knew it. You people have watched that scene more times than we shot it, which is saying something, because we shot it a lot.
Found this one, too. The 0:43 mark in “Lez Be Friends”, Season 11, episode 20. At Al’s huge belch, David breaks character & starts laughing…..Amanda has to cover her mouth for the laughter, and Ted’s expression says it all. David tries to keep his laughter somehow hidden throughout the rest of the scene.
Interesting they kept it in since I am pretty sure that episode wasn’t shot in front of a studio audience?
