Season 8 Episode 26: Kelly Knows Something
May 22, 1994
The season 8 finale, and one of the better Kelly episodes in the run. The Bundy television has died, which is a crisis, and the solution Al identifies is a sports trivia game show called Touchdown Trivia with a ten thousand dollar prize. Al knows sports. Al auditions. Al is rejected, not on the answers but on the grounds that he has no personality, which is a genuinely wounding verdict for a man whose entire self-image rests on one football game. So he enters Kelly instead. The training sequence that follows is built on a piece of established lore the series had set up five years earlier: Kelly’s memory has a hard limit, and once it is full, every new fact displaces an old one. Bud explains the mechanics to his father with a mimed demonstration of the available capacity, and the two of them proceed anyway. So Kelly learns sports, and starts losing other things, and by the time she reaches the studio she is extremely well informed on one subject and has mislaid several others. Todd Christensen, a real All-Pro tight end for the Raiders, hosts the show. According to his family he was still collecting a dollar sixty in residuals every time this episode reran. It is a strong finish to the season and a rare episode built entirely around Kelly’s intelligence, which the show treats as a quantifiable engineering constraint rather than a punchline. The game show itself is almost beside the point by the time it arrives, because the episode has already made its best joke in the living room.
