The king of the couch finally sat down with us. Ed O’Neill joined David Faustino, Darren Blatt, Brian, and a room full of dedicated Bundy fans for our fifth live Bundy Breakdown Zoom Watch Party. We dove deep into Season 5 Episode 13: The Godfather. What unfolded was two hours of laughs, stories, tech glitches, heartfelt moments, and pure Married with Children nostalgia.
If you were not there live, the full replay is available now for members in the group. Clear your schedule, grab a beer or a weenie, and settle in.
The Episode We Broke Down: Season 5, Episode 13 The Godfather
Aired February 3, 1991, this one is pure Bundy gold. Kelly brings home an older, well connected city councilman. Al starts out furious but quickly sees opportunity. Suddenly potholes get fixed, favors are granted, and Al is strutting around the neighborhood like Don Corleone with a slicked back hairdo and zero shame. Peg enables the whole thing, Bud gets bashed for most of the episode before his big redemption at the end, and Kelly does what Kelly does best.
Ed picked this episode himself. During the watch party he explained why it resonated. He loved the stretch for Al to suddenly have power and connections. The writing, the lines, the Godfather nods especially with Part III fresh in theaters all hit perfectly. Fans in the chat and on the call agreed it is one of the great power trip episodes that shows exactly why we love Al Bundy.
David and Darren kicked things off praising Buds redemption arc and the brutal beating Bud takes early in the show. Ed was humble about his own performance, saying he saw room for improvement now that he is older and more refined as an actor, but he still got plenty of laughs rewatching it. He watched the episode twice in preparation, once a week earlier out of excitement and again the night before to keep it fresh.
The group discussed standout moments like Peg making Kelly’s outfit skimpier with scissors, the family laughing at Bud’s good grades advice, and Al’s big turnaround at the end. Everyone loved the slicked back hair and how Ed nailed the Godfather vibe.
The Night Started with Classic Bundy Chaos
David shared the pre show call with Ed. He heard water running in the background. Ed answered ready to go but said his only issue was finishing washing the fucking dishes. Classic Al energy. Then the Zoom fun began.
Ed joined looking like a literal ghost backlit and translucent. Multiple devices fought each other, causing echoes and video switches. At one point we had two Eds on screen. Ed joked about it from his den and eventually got settled with some camera adjustments. The technical hiccups only added to the live watch party charm. Everyone was cracking up as we waited for the real Ed to fully appear. David reminded everyone he had called earlier to check in, and Ed hung up to finish those dishes.
Once everything stabilized, the conversation flowed naturally. Ed talked about carrying the heavy load of lines as Al, performing long monologues in front of a live audience while cameras moved and rewrites happened between takes. He admitted the first couple seasons were tough coming from theater where you rehearse extensively and the performance stays consistent. Live TV with four cameras and an unpredictable audience was a whole different beast.
He shared how his wife helped him through frustration with rewrites. She told him the audience does not want to see him upset just laugh at yourself, own the mistake, and keep going. That advice changed everything for him. He also recalled one memorable night later in the series where he got frustrated during a long speech and an audience member yelled encouragement, prompting a quick sharp response from Ed that he later regretted as it threw him further off.
Favorite Stories and Behind the Scenes Gold
We relived the classic Christmas episode where a dummy Santa comes crashing through the trees. Ed almost broke character looking at the camera for a split second. The cast could not stop laughing about the 250 pound dummy, the compressor sounds, and the jingling bells as they carried the body out while eating pizza. Ed described the scene in detail and how the whole cast turned around in disbelief.
No Maam came up too. Ed loved those bits because they gave him a break and were just ridiculous fun. He remembered the running youre a chicken gags with Amanda Bearse and how she would riff for pages while he had one dumb comeback. He called working with the whole cast great, especially in the early years when everyone clicked. The group also touched on the roof scene with the No Maam guys and how the chairs were raked for comedy.
Ed also opened up about his theater background playing serious roles like in Of Mice and Men and how he landed Al Bundy. He mentioned working with Pacino in Cruising and other films before becoming the ultimate sitcom dad or anti dad. He discussed the evolution of the character from a more realistic Chicago guy in the pilot to the cartoonish version that worked so well, noting how David started mimicking his delivery.
Fans got in on the action with great questions. One asked about potential crossovers with Roseanne since Katie Segal played on that show later. Another wondered what Al and Peg would have done stuck in the house together during COVID. Ed rolled with all of it and shared thoughts on how the Bundys would have handled lockdown.
Standout Fan Moments
Kristen from Germany set her alarm for 3 AM Berlin time and joined anyway. She delivered one of the most beautiful messages of the night, thanking Ed and the cast for making lives lighter, not taking things too seriously, and proving dreams come true after 30 years as a fan. She mentioned how the Bundys feel more real than any other TV family. Ed and the whole room were moved. She also asked about the German dub and shared how fans there reacted to Ed’s voice not matching the dubbed version.
Wild Child from Pennsylvania bonded with Ed over martial arts. He studied with Dan Inosanto and asked about Eds black belt journey with the Gracies. Ed shared how it took 16 years and kept him humble even at the height of fame. They discussed training, confidence, and even Ed’s brief time as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1969 under Chuck Noll.
William who got cut off earlier in the tech chaos finally got his turn and asked about the slicked back hair in the episode and a John Lovitz special where Ed had a tiny cameo. Adam Lazarus shared doing the Al Bundy pose all over the world including Tiananmen Square, the Colosseum, and London. He also called his daughter Pumpkin. Ed loved hearing these personal connections.
Jackie, official member number one, jumped in and shared how the show influenced her life in hilarious ways, including adopting the Al Bundy hand in pants pose as a habit. Ed was warm and engaged with everyone, answering questions about guest stars like Sam Kinison, athletes such as Ken Stabler, Bubba Smith, and Roy Jones Jr., and specific gags like throwing boyfriends against the wall.
Eds Reflections on Al Bundy and the Legacy
Ed noted how the character evolved from the more realistic pilot to the cartoonish version that worked so well. He remembered mimicking his real life uncle Joe ONeill, a brilliant judge with a larger than life personality. He told a fantastic Hollywood Squares story where Phyllis Diller recalled being introduced by Uncle Joe and not wanting to follow him because he was so funny.
Throughout the night Ed emphasized how much he enjoyed the cast chemistry, especially early on when rehearsals had everyone laughing so hard they could barely stand. He also talked about the shift in audience behavior in later seasons when crowds became rowdier and more focused on partying than watching the show, which made timing jokes harder.
He reflected on favorite lines, the Al Bundy pose origin (which he could not fully recall but knew it was not scripted), and how the show balanced bad parenting with hilarious moments. Ed appreciated the fans and the ongoing love for the series decades later.
Why These Nights Matter
Moments like this are why the Bundy Club exists. For one evening we got to sit on the virtual couch with Al Bundy himself, hear his stories, ask questions, and celebrate the show that still feels like home for so many of us. Ed was generous with his time, funny, honest, and clearly had a good time sticking around longer than planned.
We cannot thank him enough. From washing dishes to dropping Bundy wisdom and sharing laughs about everything from No Maam to German dubs, it was a night we will never forget.
A huge thank you to the Ed O’Neill for joining us, and to every fan who showed up live or caught the replay. Special appreciation goes to our Elite Slouchers!

Whoa Bundy!
Whoa Jablonsky!

The start of the zoom reminded me of the episode shen Al smashed the computer with a sledge hammer 🤣 I worried Ed would go full Al mode when he couldn’t get his computer to work as it should
That’s funny. Wish we could have captured that!
@leo honestly, if Ed had grabbed a sledgehammer and gone full Al on that Zoom rig, it would have been the most authentic moment of the whole night. A Bundy losing a fight to technology is a tale as old as time. Glad the computer survived, which is more than my dad ever managed with anything he touched.
Oh shit, I just watched it again and I was at least as nervous as I was on Thursday night. But this time I could actually watch the reactions too, and that made me really happy — because Ed genuinely seemed to enjoy it. (Not that I didn’t believe you guys, but it’s nice to see it for myself.)
Apparently, I still need a little more practice being the boss. 😅
I think you’ve just unlocked a new badge, Boss Status!
What a night! Thanks again to everyone making this such a special community. Ed seemed to genuinely enjoy it and I hope he comes back many times!
Missed me Al?
With every bullet so far!
This has to be probably one of the top lines in Al’s screentime… really unfortunate to have missed this zoom call…
Sending love and appreciation to the entire MwC cast, especially Ed O’Neill, who carried the show on his shoulders.
You have a huge fan in the Republic of Moldova who grew up to your degenerate and disfunctional family
“Missed me Al? With every bullet so far” lives rent free in my head, mostly because it’s basically how Dad handled raising all three of us. Greetings to Moldova, glad our broken little family translates that far. If nothing else, the Bundys are reliably dysfunctional in every language.
The old man finally shows up to something. Took him thirty years and a Zoom link, but at least he wasn’t hiding at the shoe store for once. Would have loved to watch Dad squint at the screen trying to remember which kid I am.
Oh no, it says Video Unavailable. Is it gone??
