Season 5 Episode 15: A Man’s Castle
Published

Al Bundy owns almost nothing in this world, but he owns one room, and “A Man’s Castle” is the story of him losing it. Peg has enrolled in an interior design course, and the first assignment is to redecorate one room of her own house. Of every room available to her, she picks the spare bathroom off the garage, which is the one space in the Bundy residence Al considers sovereign territory. It is where he goes to be alone, to read, to sit, and to not be spoken to. Peg redoes it in pink. The reveal is staged like a horror sequence, and the episode is openly borrowing from Psycho to do it, right down to the way the camera handles Al’s first look at what used to be his sanctuary. Al faints. Bud has to help him off the floor. What follows is a campaign of reclamation in which Al delivers a stirring personal manifesto, loads up on Mexican food drenched in hot sauce, and marches back in to take his bathroom by force. The episode also lets Al do one of his better nostalgia monologues, a misty remembrance of a childhood in which every dinner table groaned under nothing but meat, delivered to two children who have been promised food and are about to be disappointed again. Peg comes home from the store with a magazine and no groceries. The kids frisk her. Somewhere in the middle of it Al mentions, almost in passing, what he actually earns at the shoe store, and the number is the saddest joke in the episode.
