Season 3 Episode 2: I’m Going to Sweatland
Published

A perspiration stain on one of Al’s shirts turns out to look like Elvis Presley, and the Bundy house becomes a destination. Fans arrive to see it. The shirt acquires an audience. Peggy and Marcy, both devoted, treat the whole thing as genuine, and the episode is built on how long a family can monetise a laundry accident before it collapses.

What the series is doing here is a joke about pareidolia, the tendency to see faces in random patterns, without ever naming it, and it is unusually gentle for this show. Nobody is punished for believing in the shirt. The pilgrims are sincere, Peggy’s reverence is sincere, and the only cynic in the house is Al, who cannot see why anyone would drive across town to look at his sweat.

There is a real connection behind the casting of the subject. Katey Sagal met Elvis Presley in life: her father, the director Boris Sagal, made Girl Happy with him in 1965. She said in a 1993 interview that she was not much of a fan at the time, being more interested in the Rolling Stones, which makes Peggy’s devotion here a performance in both directions.

The episode logs a few small facts for the record. Peggy confirms sixteen years of marriage, Marcy mentions Steve’s appendectomy scar, and Peggy name-drops Youngstown, Ohio, Ed O’Neill’s actual home town, which the series used more than once. In the credits, one of the several Elvis performers is listed as “Elvis ?” while the rest are not, which is either a typesetting accident or the funniest joke in the episode.
