Season 6, Episode 3: “If Al Had a Hammer” is one of the most important episodes in Married with Children history. This is the episode where everything changed for Bud Bundy. Tired of being the overlooked, girl-repelling youngest Bundy, Bud walks through the front door as a completely new person: Grandmaster B, a self-proclaimed street-tough rapper from New York with zero connection to the Bundy family.

The premise is classic MWC gold. Al discovers an old hammer in the basement and becomes obsessed with a renovation project, tearing apart the house while Peg watches from the couch. Meanwhile, Bud announces he’s starting junior college and wants a fresh start. His solution? Reinvent himself as a hip-hop persona so ridiculous that only the Bundys could produce it. He struts into the living room in a black jacket, backwards cap, and sunglasses, telling the family to forget Bud Bundy ever existed.

What makes this episode a classic is watching every member of the family react to Bud’s transformation. Kelly immediately starts calling him everything except Grandmaster B. Al barely notices because he’s too busy destroying the house. And Peg just rolls with it, the way only Peg can. The contrast between Bud’s dead-serious commitment to the bit and the family’s total refusal to play along is peak Married with Children comedy.

This episode also marks the debut of Grandmaster B’s first rap, performed for a girl he brings home. It’s awkward, it’s hilarious, and it launched one of the show’s most beloved running gags across multiple seasons.
