Here’s a question that separates the casual fans from the people who’ve watched every episode way too many times. What did Peg’s mom reportedly eat, according to Al, and yes, that includes Kelly’s pet bird?
That’s what Darren Blatt asked during a recent Bundy Club Zoom, and it got the whole room thinking. David Faustino, Norman Jablonsky, Warren Blatt and Married with Children writer Richard Gurman all took a shot at it. Somebody yelled “the turkey.” David wanted to know if she ate two animals or just one. Warren pointed out that Kelly’s pet was the turkey, and Norman upped the stakes by asking if anyone remembered the pet’s name.
The answer was Tweety, the pet bird. Then it got worse, because there was also a full grown pet dog named Rusty. That’s classic Al Bundy material. We never meet Peg’s mother on screen, but thanks to Al’s jokes we know she’s big enough to eat the family pets and make the house shake on her way to the fridge.
That running gag is one of the best parts of the show. Peg’s mom stays offstage, but you hear her on the phone, you hear about her appetite, and every mention gets a bigger laugh than the one before. It’s the kind of joke that only works on a show that never once tried to be nice about anybody.
That’s what the Bundy Club is about: fans hanging out with David Faustino and the people who made the show, trading trivia and arguing over details only true Bundy fans would know. Every Zoom has moments like this one, where a simple trivia question turns into a group effort and some laughs along the way.
