Season 1 Episode 13: Johnny Be Gone
June 28, 1987
Al and Peggy’s favourite burger joint, Johnny B. Goode’s, is closing, and they have until it shuts to get there one last time. They never make it. Bud needs help first, then Kelly needs help, then Marcy is in their kitchen in a towel using their refrigerator, and the clock runs out while the two of them are still in their own living room. That is the whole episode, and it is one of the most formally interesting half-hours the series produced.
It plays out in real time, in a single continuous scene, from start to finish, an experiment the show attempted exactly once more, ten years later, in “The Desperate Half-Hour.” It is also a bottle episode: the entire thing takes place in the Bundy living room, with only the main cast appearing. The constraint is the engine. Every interruption has to arrive through one door or down one staircase, and the mounting pressure comes from nothing but people needing things at the wrong moment.
The venue matters too. Peggy and Al met at Johnny B. Goode’s in high school, which makes the errand sentimental rather than culinary, and the episode never says so out loud. There is a nice piece of continuity in the costume: the towel Marcy wears while her dress is in the dryer reads “Come ‘n Go Motel,” one of the towels Al and Peggy stole earlier in the season in “Married… without Children.” Marcy’s dinner party, meanwhile, is a bid for a managerial post at Kyoto National Bank, which season two confirms she won, with Steve inheriting her old job. David Faustino named this one of his favourite episodes.
