How the Crew Kept Straight Faces (They Didn’t)

Married with Children cast in a classic ensemble scene from the England episodes

Our crew were absolute professionals: camera operators, lighting techs, sound, props, wardrobe. But even pros have their limits. And the Bundys broke them constantly.

Some camera operators had to turn away during scenes because Ed or Christina cracked them up mid-take. Boom mic guys shook with laughter and ruined audio. Stagehands hid behind walls to avoid being seen while laughing.

I’ll never forget the time a lighting tech fell off his small platform because of a joke Ed delivered during rehearsal. Or when Christina improvised a Kelly line so ridiculous that half the crew had tears in their eyes.

One of the greatest compliments to our cast was when crew members told us our show was their favorite job, not because it was easy, but because nobody knew what would happen next.

The crew were part of the family. And they broke just as often as we did.

A lighting tech fell off his platform because of something Ed said? That tracks. Ed could deliver a line so dry you wouldn’t even realize you were laughing until you were already on the floor. And Christina improvising Kelly lines was basically her superpower. Half the time even I didn’t know what was coming, and I was standing right there. The crew breaking was honestly the best review we could get. When the boom guy can’t hold the mic steady because he’s dying, you know the scene is working.
