The Episodes That Nearly Got Us Censored
February 26, 2026
Look, we pushed boundaries. Constantly. It was part of the identity of the show. But there were a handful of episodes where even Fox got nervous, and that’s saying something.
Sometimes it was the language. Sometimes it was the theme. Sometimes it was just a joke that hit a little too hard. Our writers loved dancing right up to the edge of what TV would allow. And sometimes? They danced past it.
There were storylines the network questioned immediately. Episodes with heavy innuendo. Episodes with bold satire. Episodes that poked the bear of American culture. And of course, any time the Bundys went after moral crusaders, the network braced itself.
But here’s the thing: Fox knew controversy helped us grow. So instead of forcing us to tone down the humor, they often asked us to fine-tune it, to sharpen the joke, adjust the phrasing, or change the angle just enough to get it past Standards & Practices without losing the punch.
The writers became experts at coding humor. If they couldn’t say something directly, they’d imply it. If they couldn’t imply it, they’d bury it inside sarcasm. If they couldn’t bury it, they’d flip it into something even funnier.
We skirted the line, we bent rules, we dodged censors, but we never watered down who we were.
And honestly? The fights with the network made the show even better.
