How Katey Sagal created Peg Bundy out of thin air

Peg Bundy didn’t start out as Peg Bundy. At least not the Peg you know – the queen of big red hair, wilder-than-life outfits, sky-high heels, and that unstoppable attitude. When the role was written, the producers originally imagined a more beaten-down housewife, casual clothes, maybe an apron, hair pulled back…

Then Katey Sagal walked into the audition wearing her hair in a red bouffant and an outfit loud enough to stop traffic. That wasn’t in the script. That wasn’t suggested. That was Katey’s instinct. She saw Peg Bundy not just as a housewife, but as a woman who deliberately refused to be invisible. Someone whose hair entered the room before she did. Someone who performed her femininity and sexuality like a weapon and a wink.

Katey has said in interviews that she created Peg’s look completely on her own. She wanted Peg to be a force – a woman who didn’t apologize for being too much. And from the moment she walked in, the producers knew she’d reinvented the character. Peg wasn’t supposed to be glamorous, but Katey made her unforgettable.

Her look became a signature. The hair. The makeup. The leggings. The heels she wore even in the kitchen. Everything about Peg was exaggerated, colorful, outrageous. But Peg wasn’t just visual. Katey brought heart to the character. She found the humor in Peg’s laziness, the sweetness in her manipulation, the strength in her self-centeredness. She made Peg absurd and relatable at the same time. She was a force of nature.

Let me tell you something about my Mom. Well, not my REAL mom, but TV Mom, which honestly is the only mom that matters at this point. Katey walked in and said “Nah, I’m not wearing an apron.” And THAT, folks, is how a legend was born. Can you imagine Peg Bundy in a regular outfit? Making dinner? Being helpful? That’s not a Bundy, that’s a D’Arcy. Mom turned doing absolutely nothing into an art form. She could spend Dad’s money faster than he could earn it, and that man was working 14-hour days at Gary’s Shoes. The hair, the outfits, the attitude… she created a character that was the OPPOSITE of every TV mom before her. And as her son, I can confirm: growing up with Peg Bundy meant learning self-sufficiency real quick because nobody was making you a sandwich in that house. Ever. Best TV mom of all time and I will fight anyone who disagrees.

Katey walked in and decided Peg was going to wear the tallest heels, the reddest hair, and zero respect for anyone in the house. TV mom of the year if the year was 1987 and we were all a little concerned.
